For the construction of new high-speed lines, SNCF needed used diesel-electric locomotives in the early 1990s. They subsequently acquired 44 used Class 2400 locomotives from the Dutch State Railways. The purchase agreement included an overhaul by the workshop in Tilburg. The use of two locomotives at each end of the trains provided sufficient tractive and pushing power to negotiate the gradients on the new line with the desired train weight. In SNCF's numbering system, the Class 2400 locomotives were classified in the 60000-70000 series. The 62400s soon earned the nickname "Hollandaises" from French railway workers.
