With the introduction of multiple-unit operation for long-distance trains in 1996, SBB procured 60 IC Bt type driving trailers. The 62-seat vehicle is conceptually based on the familiar Eurocity carriages. Its features also include a wheelchair, stroller, and bicycle compartment, as well as a closed toilet system with a bioreactor. The front shape and driver's cab largely correspond to the Re 460 locomotives, thus achieving a homogeneous appearance.
