To meet the increased demands of passenger and express train services, the Prussian State Railways developed the P 8 class passenger locomotive. Of this versatile, triple-coupled engine, over 3,700 units were built by German factories alone by 1923. The P 8 was universally applicable and could be found hauling all types of trains. After the turmoil of the two World Wars, they were in service with almost all European railway administrations.
Poland received a total of 192 locomotives from Prussian stocks after 1918. For the PKP (Polish State Railways), they were the most important steam locomotives for local passenger traffic from the outset and were designated as Class Ok1. Over the years, 429 locomotives of this class were used by the PKP (Polish State Railways). The Ok1-359 was only withdrawn from active service in the early 1980s. However, it remained in service as a museum locomotive for many more years.
