In 1961, the PKP (Pzechoslovak State Railways) procured 30 four-axle electric locomotives from Škoda in Plzeň (Czechoslovakia), which were classified as Class EU05. These were a slightly modified variant of the Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) Class E 499.1. For use on the Centralna Magistrala Kolejowa Warsaw – Krakow/Katowice line, built from 1971 onwards, the EU05 locomotives were rebuilt at the Gdańsk repair works between 1973 and 1977 by changing their gear ratios to allow a maximum speed of 160 km/h. In accordance with their use in express train service, they were redesignated as class EP05 and painted orange instead of their previous livery in two different shades of green.
