With the commissioning of the first "Taurus" locomotive, Class 1016, in the summer of 1999, the rapid modernization of the Austrian electric locomotive fleet began. A dual-system version of this universal locomotive was also procured for AC operation at 15 kV/16.7 Hz and 25 kV/50 Hz. By 2006, 282 locomotives of Class 1116 had been put into service. They are approved for speeds of up to 230 km/h. Their power output is 6,400 kW.
The Railjet is a significant component of European long-distance rail services, connecting not only major cities in Austria but also international destinations. Locomotives 1116.201–251 were adapted for the Railjet services introduced in December 2008 at Siemens in Munich. Locomotive 1116 238 received this equipment in May 2011.
