With almost 4,000 units produced, the Prussian P 8, later classified as Class 38, went down in history as one of the most numerous steam locomotives ever built. After the turmoil of the two World Wars, they were in service with almost all European railway administrations. In Austria, five locomotives ultimately remained, forming the ÖBB Class 638.
