The locomotive factory in Vienna-Floridsdorf manufactured over 1,100 locomotives of the 52 series. After the end of the war, 113 locomotives remained in Austria. Improvements were made to many machines, some of the tub tenders were equipped with cabins, making it possible to have a train driver's compartment.
At the end of the steam locomotive era, there were individual variations in the paintwork on some 52s, which were initiated by the staff. The Strasshof train service on the Northern Railway had some of the “colorful” steam locomotives in their boiler house, which were not atypical for the time. The last examples were retired in 1976 and were therefore among the last steam locomotives on the ÖBB's standard-gauge route network.
