To replace the aging steam locomotives Rh 392, 694, and others with modern vehicles, powerful diesel locomotives were procured starting in 1959. As was common with the electric shunting locomotives of the time, a drive via jackshaft and coupling rods was also installed. A total of no fewer than 111 locomotives were delivered to the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) by 1978. The locomotive with hydraulic power transmission delivers 440 kW and reaches a top speed of 65 km/h.
