The model is equipped with a four-pole electrical coupler on one side. A DIP switch allows the power supply between the locomotive and the ROCO Railjet control car (only in the version with electrical coupler) to be switched for push-pull operation.

The Class 1216 (Taurus 3) electric locomotives are multi-system, three-phase AC universal locomotives based on the technology of the Siemens EuroSprinter family. The exterior and the high-speed bogies were adopted from the first two Taurus generations, but with some detail modifications.
From 2006 to 2008, 50 locomotives were delivered to the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). They are designed for operation on lines with network voltages of 15 kV/16.7 Hz, 25 kV/50 Hz, and 3 kV/DC. Their maximum power output is 6,400 kW, and their top speed is 230 km/h. They are used in national and international passenger and freight transport.
For each country, the locomotive must also be equipped with the respective country-specific packages. These packages include special equipment for train radio, displays, voice announcements, train protection systems, signage, and additional features. The locomotives of variant A (1216.0) are equipped not only for use in Austria and Germany but also with an additional country-specific package for Italy and Slovenia.
