WHAT IF...?
The beginning of the 20th century was a time when the railway had long since outgrown its infancy and was entering its era as the first mass transit system. At that time, the first locomotives of the 310 series were delivered by the Floridsdorf locomotive factory to the Imperial and Royal Austrian State Railways (kkStB). With its powerful four-cylinder compound engine, its driving and coupling wheels over 2.10 meters high, crowned by a mighty boiler, it is considered by many railway enthusiasts to be the most beautiful steam locomotive in Austria.
Developed by Ing. Dr. hc Karl Gölsdorf, this locomotive, which is considered the most influential in Austrian steam locomotive construction, quickly aroused interest among neighboring railway companies. Following the tradition of testing newly developed machines with friendly state railways, it is quite conceivable that a comparison was drawn with the "beautiful Württemberg locomotive." To crown this story, the engine was also painted in the appropriate livery of the Royal Württemberg State Railways.
