The E.656 series is a six-axle Italian electric locomotive series nicknamed "Caimano" (German: Caiman). It is a further development of the E.636, E.645 and E.646 series, which also have a split locomotive body. However, compared to the E.636 series, they have different axle and pivot pin distances. The high tractive effort and top speed of 150 km/h enable them to be used on passenger and freight trains.
