In 1927, the Italian State Railways (FS) procured a total of 40 rod-driven locomotives from the "Società Ernesto Breda" locomotive factory. Weighing 94 tons and measuring 13,910 mm in length, these 1'D1' wheel arrangement locomotives were powered by three-phase AC and had a continuous output of 2,200 kW. During their initial years of operation, the body was painted black, in keeping with the style of steam locomotives. The E.432 was frequently seen hauling international express trains on the Brenner line during the 1950s. The Italian State Railways continued to use the E.432 series until 1976.
