The Italian State Railways commissioned ABB technomasio to build 20 dual-system locomotives for use in cross-border and cross-system traffic between Italy and Austria and Germany. These high-performance locomotives reach speeds of 220 km/h and are capable of generating 6 MW or 5.5 MW respectively under 3 kV direct current or 15 kV 16 2/3 Hz alternating current.
The machines, which entered service in 1997, are still proving their worth in use in Italy today and most of them bear the current Mercitalia Rail paint scheme.
