To meet the increased demands of passenger and express train services, the Prussian State Railway developed the P8 class passenger locomotive. Over 3,700 of these versatile, triple-coupled locomotives were built by German factories alone by 1923. Later designated as Class 38 10-40, this steam locomotive delivered 880 kW, weighed approximately 130 tons including the tender with full supplies, and was permitted to travel at 100 km/h forwards and 50 km/h in reverse.
The repainting of the DRG's large locomotive fleet to the new standard black/red livery naturally took time. Consequently, many locomotives still sported the olive green/reddish brown/black livery that had been in use until 1926 until around 1930, although they had already been re-numbered.
