. This class of steam locomotive was the most powerful tender locomotive ever procured by the German Reichsbahn. A total of 45 of these gigantic machines were built. It earned its nickname "Queen of the Mountains" due to its predominant use on the Sonneberg–Probstzella railway line, the Spessart Ramp, the Franconian Forest Railway, the Geislingen Ascent, the Schiefe Ebene (Inclined Plane), and the Rübeland Railway. After World War II, 31 locomotives of this class were transferred to the German Reichsbahn. In the 1950s, boiler equipment, fittings, pumps, cabs, etc., were adapted to the DR's (German State Railway) standards during maintenance, thus largely standardizing them. Between 1966 and 1972, 24 locomotives were converted to oil firing, and 10 received a new boiler without a steam dome. The Eisfeld–Sonneberg railway line was their last area of operation. The last locomotives were not retired until 1981.
