Unlike the Class 110, the Class 108 locomotives have a reverse-flow gearbox and a fuel-efficient, reduced-power engine. In keeping with their new purpose as a shunting locomotive, the boiler was also eliminated; instead, additional cooler units and a preheater were installed.
