. On January 24, 1905, electric operation commenced on the 23.7 km long railway line into the Ammer Valley. It was the first journey of an electric train under a simple alternating current overhead line. This made it the first line to be equipped with a new system, the "railway current" still used today in Central and Northern Europe.
The line was initially served by electric railcars and later by small electric locomotives capable of speeds up to 50 km/h. The energy, in the form of single-phase alternating current, came from the Kammerl hydroelectric power plant on the Ammer River. From 1930, the robust LAG 5 – later 169 005 – bolstered the electric locomotive fleet on the Oberammergau Railway. Despite its length of only 8.7 meters, this little powerhouse proved its worth admirably.
For decades, the railway, with its cozy atmosphere and idyllic setting typical of a Bavarian local line, held a special appeal for all railway enthusiasts. The era of the "Neinasechzga" (a nickname for the locomotives) in local service on the Oberammergau Railway came to an end in May 1981. With the withdrawal of the old locomotives, regular service began, and the charm of a unique era was irretrievably lost.
