With the summer timetable of 1991, Deutsche Bundesbahn (German Federal Railway) put the Mannheim – Stuttgart high-speed line into operation. In addition to the new ICE trains, this line was also used by the newly introduced InterRegio lines 26 Saarbrücken – Lindau and 27 Karlsruhe – Nuremberg. The carriages on these lines, as well as on line 28 Karlsruhe – Stuttgart, were equipped with vacuum toilets with the silver-colored water inlet nozzles, which are clearly visible on the exterior of the model. Due to the numerous changes of direction in Stuttgart, Munich, and Friedrichshafen, these lines were equipped with control cars from 1995 onwards to speed up operations there.
The IR 461 from Trier to Innsbruck covered a significant portion of its route in Austria from Lindau onwards. Traction was then provided by the 1044 series, which hauled the IR 461 over the famous Arlberg line until its discontinuation in June 2001.
