The E 03 series was developed in the mid-1960s and was intended to be the most powerful DB locomotive to date for heavy passenger trains. 145 series locomotives were put into service between 1970 and 1974. The last 30 locomotives (from 103 216 onwards) received an enlarged cab, making them 700 mm longer.
At the end of its official service life, a locomotive was built in the new traffic red livery with contrasting frame details, following a suggestion from many fans of this series. Just like with the classic Class 103 in red/beige. The company ROCO sponsored this livery. As a special feature, each locomotive received a dedicatory inscription below the right-hand side cab window at the presentation.
