The E 03 series was developed in the mid-1960s and was intended to be the most powerful DB locomotive to date for heavy passenger trains. 145 series locomotives were put into service between 1970 and 1974. The last 30 locomotives (from 103 216 onwards) received an enlarged cab, making them 700 mm longer.
Towards the end of its official service life, a model was produced in the new traffic red livery with contrasting frame details, following suggestions from many fans of this series. This was similar to the classic red/beige Class 103. The company ROCO sponsored this livery. As a special feature, each locomotive received a dedicatory inscription below the right-hand side window of the driver's cab during its presentation.
