In the 1970s, the former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) had a great need for powerful freight diesel locomotives for medium-weight shunting and mainline service. As a result, the lighter variant T 466.2 was derived from the industrial locomotive type T 448. It was manufactured by ČKD in Prague from 1977 onwards in nine production series (each with minor differences) totaling 494 units and entered service with the ČSD by 1986.
