The CSD Class 477.0 represents the last and most technically advanced steam locomotive class of the Czechoslovak State Railways (CSD). It was manufactured between 1951 and 1955 by CKD (CKD Sokolovo in Prague) in a total of 60 units and evolved from the preceding Class 476.1. The locomotives were designed as powerful express train tank locomotives with a 2'D2' wheel arrangement for heavy passenger train service and, with a service weight of around 131 tons, were considered among the heaviest tank locomotives in Europe at the time.

The three-cylinder engines reached a top speed of around 100 km/h and had a starting tractive effort of almost 110 kN. Visually, the Class 477.0 was characterized by its distinctive lines, including a streamlined smokebox, Witte smoke deflectors, and an elegant, usually colorful livery with decorative stripes. This earned it the nickname "Papousek" (Parrot) in everyday service.
