Rack railways, with their unique combination of mountain scenery and daring routes featuring numerous bridges and tunnels, exude a very special fascination. The train's movement is achieved by a cogwheel engaging with a rack located in the center of the track, as the ordinary friction between wheel and rail is insufficient for the steep gradients. On rack railways of the so-called mixed system, where friction sections alternate with rack sections depending on the gradient, the tractive force is provided by a single locomotive. The Alps are home to a particularly large number of privately owned rack railways, which are extremely popular with tourists from all over the world.
