In the 1970s, the former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) had a great need for powerful freight diesel locomotives for medium-heavy shunting and mainline service. As a result, the lighter variant T 466.2 was derived from the industrial locomotive type T 448. It was manufactured by ČKD in Prague from 1977 in nine series (each with small differences) with a total of 494 units and put into service with ČSD by 1986.
In 1998, the series designation T 466.2 was changed to 742. Many locomotives are still in use for CD Cargo on Czech railways for freight transport.
