In the 1970s, the former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) had a great need for powerful freight diesel locomotives for medium-weight shunting and mainline service. As a result, the lighter variant T 466.2 was derived from the industrial locomotive type T 448. It was manufactured by ČKD in Prague from 1977 onwards in nine production series (each with minor differences) totaling 494 units and entered service with the ČSD by 1986. In 1998, the series designation T 466.2 was changed to 742.
