After the Ae 4/4 locomotives of the Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon Railway, which had been put into service from 1944 onwards, had proven themselves successfully for over two decades, the replacement of further older mainline locomotives was due at the beginning of the 1960s. While the SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) aimed to procure Re 4/4 II locomotives with classic direct control and single-phase AC motors, the BLS (Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon Railway) opted for a more modern technology with silicon rectifiers and shaft-driven AC motors. These locomotives, initially classified as Ae 4/4 II and later as Re 4/4 after technical improvements, were built by SLM and BBC and used in both passenger and freight transport on the networks of BLS, GBS, SEZ and BN as well as the adjacent SBB lines.
