Due to increased train weights in express train traffic, it was developed for Austrian steam locomotive construction most influential designer, Ing. Dr. hc Karl Gölsdorf from 1906 a new express locomotive with the wheel arrangement 1'C2'. This “inverted” axle arrangement compared to the Pacific design, which was popular in many countries, made it possible to accommodate a large standing boiler with a wide grate. Together with the massive four-cylinder composite engine, a highly powerful machine was created despite the low Austrian axle load limit of just 14.5 t, which is considered by many railway enthusiasts to be the most beautiful steam locomotive in Austria.

While the first 11 engines were delivered in a wet steam version, the remaining 90 examples of this type were put into service as superheated steam locomotives of the 310 series and used by the kkStB primarily on the Northern, Franz Josef and Western Railways between Vienna and Salzburg in high-quality passenger train service used.

The “Russian glossy sheet metal”, known as “blue sheet metal” for short, was an alternative to primed and painted sheet metal in the early railway eras, but also an aesthetic element. It was only used in areas with high heat radiation, such as the casings of the boiler and cylinder.

Black and white images suggest that locomotives of the 310 series also received “blue sheet” panels. Colored images also support this assumption. When it comes to the color scheme, the black-painted smoke chamber cladding sets a special accent. The appearance of this exceptionally designed locomotive is very successful.
