These steam locomotives, known due to the high traction force as “Jumbo” engines, were used almost through the whole of Germany and in many other European cities. Its top speeds were 80 km/h moving forwards, and 50 km/h in reverse operation. Some of these already highly powerful engines were further improved by the German Federal Railways to 2,100 HP (1,546 kW) when they were converted from 1955 to oil-firing. From 1968, the oil-fired DB locomotives were given the class designation 043.
